April 2017 – Newsletter
2017 got off to a busy start with Hayley and I being in the USA for a few days before the start of all the conventions. As always we were so warmly welcomed and the extra effort everyone puts in for us really is appreciated.
It was then on to the 2017 Grand Slam Club Ovis Convention followed by SCI. As always it was so great to see so many familiar faces and all of the new ones. Las Vegas never fails to impress and this year was no exception. And it was rounded off with an unbelievable Superbowl that will be remembered for many years to come !!!! What an amazing
come back by the New England Patriots – Good times!!
On the approach back in to Harare by plane, we were greeted by the glorious sight of lush green bushveld and water everywhere. After so many years of sub standard rainy seasons – this was a huge relief and thanks to Tropical Storm Dineo (effects pictured above right) we had a much extended and greatly received rainy season.
A few short weeks after our return, I began my first elephant bull hunt of the season in a very wet Gonarezhou communal land. Initially it was so wet that we could not make it to camp and so spent two days in the Save Valley waiting for it to dry out enough for us to make it over the river and into the area-we finally managed to get in on day three. It was Vladimir’s second elephant hunt with me, having shot a 501lber in the previous November.
There was great elephant movement in the area and we soon had success despite the tough weather conditions. Vladimir dispatched a huge bull elephant at close quarters completing his quest for a bull over 60lbs.
The recovery was interesting and the trip back to camp was a bit longer than expected due to a sudden flash flood in the area-but nothing that a few stiff whiskies and a good winch couldn’t fix!!! What a hunt, what an experience and credit where credit is due for the client being so fantastic in some seriously adverse weather conditions., long days and short nights. But in the end-what a result!!! Поздравления Vladirmir for your perseverance and ultimate success-can’t wait to see what next year has in store for us.
I leave in the next couple of days for my next safari and will send out updates as and when. 2017 looks to be a promising year with some awesome hunts in the offing.
