August 2022 – Newsletter
The season’s hunting has been progressing well with Covid restrictions playing a very minor role these days and thankfully travel is back on track. Our winter is drawing to a close and we are going into hotter weather, generally a great time for buffalo/plains game hunting.
The beginning of August saw the arrival of first time buffalo hunters, Georges and Elmar – good friends who would hunt on a 2 on 1 basis with PH Brent Hein for an old Dugga boy each. I guided Tanja on her second buffalo hunt and this time we were after multiple Dugga boys. The group was joined by assistant Namibian PH, friend, videographer and raconteur, Arnold. Veteran Namibian operator Max also joined the group as well as Alberto. The hunt took place in the Bubye valley Conservancy in the southern part of the area out of Ngali Camp.
After getting their eye in on some plains game, it wasn’t long before Brent put Georges onto a huge ancient old bull, late afternoon on the second day. Georges did the rest, taking out the heart with one well-placed shot. A fairly arduous recovery ensued but all part of the hunt and everyone was in high spirits after the day’s excitement. The same day, after a short track, Tanja made a great shot on the first of her four Dugga boys. Elmar was up next and did an outstanding job the next morning and after following a lone bull for a short while they got their chance and Elmar dispatched the old bull quickly. Brent, Max and the two hunters spent the rest of their time effectively, with both Georges and Elmar hunting zebra, impala, eland and brown hyena .
After the rest of the posse, who were on a shorter hunt, departed – Tanja, Arnold and I continued on our quest for old Dugga boys and we saw buffalo at least 3 times day. Some were just not old enough, some saw us, some got our wind and some were just in too thick bush to chance a shot. Tanya’s patience and perseverance paid off pretty soon we had the right opportunities at the right buffalo and Tanja took full advantage of the,, hitting 3 out of 4 dugga boys in the heart and the fourth narrowly missing the heart and piercing both lungs. All very memorable hunts. All tracked and approached to within 50 yards and all shot precisely where they were supposed to be shot. Having lots of footage and photos to remember the hunt was an added bonus but in truth it will be a long time before this hunt will be forgotten. In between we manged to hunt two fantastic kudu bulls, eland , bushbuck and brown hyena. Weidmansheil to the whole team, some excellent tracking and spotting by the trackers and some phenomenal shooting by the clients. I am already looking forward to next year’s adventure!!
We have a few licenses left for elephant, buffalo and leopard for 2022 and some timeslots left in late September, early October and early November. Alternatively 2023 bookings are well underway – get in touch if you would like any more details.
