May 2012 – Newsletter

May has seen the beginning of winter arrive with a noticeable change in temperature and landscape. The lush green foliage of the rainy season is now beginning to subside with the leaves falling from the trees and the general flora thinning as is expected at this time of year. For all of our clients arriving from now until the middle of August – a few extra woollies are definitely recommended for the early morning starts and evenings around the campfire.

Hunting in May began in ernest in our Chirundu and Nyakasanga Concessions with the arrival of close friends and clients Julio and Jaime accompanied by Martha from Mexico for an elephant/buffalo hunt each, guided by Jannie and Stephen Meyer respectively. Day two saw Julio taking an excellent elephant and Jaime taking his buffalo- all before 8 ‘o’ clock in the morning. To top off a memorable day Jaime finished with a 501-
ber elephant bull at last light-what a day!

Julio bagged two buffalo in the following two days as well as a big plains game bag including bushbuck, giraffe, impala, kudu, tsessebe, warthog and zebra. Jaime added a few, much sought after nocturnal species to his bag taking a civet, genet, jackal and porcupine as well as an impala and a warthog.
Both Julio and Jaime’s exceptional shooting on this safari deserve special mention-together with Martha’s assistance and fantastic company.

Peter arrived shortly after Julio and Jaime’s safari, starting off well with a huge hippo bull, taken on land followed by an excellent leopard tom by the end of day three. A short break at Mhondoro yielded some excellent results including bushbuck, kudu, waterbuck, wildebeest and zebra. The hunt is ongoing and we are confident Peter will be successful on his buffalo in the next day or two.

Further afield in Chirisa and the Bubye Valley Conservancy hunts have recently commenced and we will keep you updated as to progress in these a
In Gonarezhou there is very good elephant movement at the moment which is uncharacteristic for this time of year, but several excellent elephant have been seen in the last two weeks.
We have also, just been allocated a leopard permit in Zimbabwe’s BEST leopard hunting area for any of you interested in a fantastic leopard trophy.
** We look forward to some awesome hunting in the months to follow **
