General

The Chipinda/Chibwedziwa hunting area is a CAMPFIRE or communal area directly bordering Gonarezhou on the northern side. Being a communal land the elephant bulls are largely migratory and the hunting for big bulls is seasonal.

Prime-time is early season(Feb/March/April) during and after the rains. There is an influx of elephant bulls into the area due to the ripening crops, ripening marula fruit and an abundance of water. The National Park that has an ideal carrying capacity of +/-4000 elephant is now home to +/-12000, resulting in a spill-over into the neighbouring areas. This together with the reduction in quota has definitely increased the success rate, and quality of elephant bulls taken in recent years, with the yearly average consistently being over 60 pounds in 2017 and 2018.

During the drier months, the huge elephant population within the park forage far and wide also resulting in good movement into the hunting area. The start of the rains in mid-November can also be beneficial as the concentrated elephant move into new areas in search of food and water. October to early December has also proven to be a good time to hunt these bulls.
