General

We offer and guide premium elephant bull hunts in the northern and eastern sections bordering Gonarezhou National Park, specifically in Chibwedziwa, Naivasha, Mahenye, and Gonagudzingwa. These regions are renowned for their rugged beauty and their exceptional potential for producing quality old bulls.

Both elephant and buffalo hunting are seasonal, but when timed right, the chances of encountering a mature trophy bull are very high. There is a real opportunity to hunt very large elephants, and I have personally guided several hunts resulting in bulls over 70 lbs per tusk. That said, a realistic expectation is a bull over 50 lbs, which remains an impressive and hard-earned trophy.

Similarly, buffalo hunting in these areas offers an excellent chance at wide-horned, mature “Dugga boys”, with the emphasis always on targeting old bulls past their prime breeding age.

Prime Hunting Seasons

  • Early Season (February to April): This is one of the most productive times of year, coinciding with the rainy season and its immediate aftermath. The ripening of crops and marula fruit, combined with the abundance of water, draws elephant bulls into the hunting concessions in significant numbers.
  • Late Season (October to Early December): As the dry season peaks, the elephants are forced to travel farther for food and water. The onset of early rains in mid-November often sparks a new wave of movement as animals shift ranges, offering new hunting opportunities.

Gonarezhou National Park, designed to sustain approximately 4,000 elephants, now supports a population of over 12,000. This overpopulation causes a significant spill-over into neighbouring hunting areas, enhancing opportunities to track and hunt these giants.

In recent years, a reduction in hunting quotas has contributed to both the increased quality and success rates of hunts. In fact, the average tusk weight exceeded 60 lbs in both 2017 and 2018—an exceptional benchmark by any standard.
